00:00:59 – We’re still able to thrive for a number of years and in this period…

I guess we would have to start with the our foundational document, which is the Treaty of Waitangi, which was signed in 1840 between the indigenous population and the crown, being the British Government, of course.

And so that really enabled the British Government to come in and establish a government here.

So there’s been a lot of controversy around that document because. There was a mild division and there was an English version and they don’t completely line up. So Marty saw themselves as handing over governance to the crown, whereas in the English version it said that the crown was taking sovereignty of the nation and so there was this sort of disagreement about what was actually meant. So and for a period there Maori.

We’re still able to thrive for a number of years and in this period from the eighteen thirties even earlier to about the eighteen sixties, Marty were very entrepreneurial.

The Jews of the Jewish community of New Zealand goes right back to the very earliest waves of immigration to the country. You have identities such as draw palette. Being there at in 1831 and here was actually involved with some of the martyr marikar relationships going on at the time.

You have Abraham Hort who very well known Jew, I’m actually from Wellington but he was one of the founders of the Wellington Jewish community.

He arrived in 1840 You know there’s they’ve been joined by many other immigrants along the way from our Jewish immigrants along the way from Europe.

And the UK and actually there are streets in Wellington, for example, that are named after some of those very early immigrants, such as the levy brothers.

00:28:23 – Jews, you could argue, have had it a bit harder because, you know, we’re the minority.

They’ll, always be racists. And I guess Jews, you could argue, have had it a bit harder because, you know, we’re the minority. We’re a bit different, you know, in the very earliest periods of New Zealand history.

Yeah, that was the Christians and then there was the Jewish people and the Jewish people were really the minority.

And these days you have many other minorities. But you know, I think New Zealand has been relatively good relative to many other Western countries around the world.

I mean, yes, they probably should have had, they should have permitted more Jewish people to enter Israel, enter New Zealand before the before World War Two and many of these people. Who could have made it into New Zealand, probably, possibly made it to Israel instead.

00:34:47 – There is the New Zealand Israel Friendship Society, but they’re doing their best

There’s been a lot of Kiwis who have come over the years. Some are very integrated into Israeli society.

I’m sure that there are numbers out there that could tell you exactly, but a lot of Kiwis, there’s no real organisation in New Zealand, sorry, Israel, that really brings them together.

There is the New Zealand Israel Friendship Society, but they’re doing their best, but they’re not very active, but there’s no real organization that they can coalesce around.

So it’s really hard to get a good understanding of how many there are here. There’s one community or a keyboard called israel Valley, there’s a lot of Kiwis there.

00:40:16 – Because it was right on Christmas when it happened.

The Labour government is more inclined against Israel and the national is more inclined towards Israel.

However, it was under the national government that the UN resolution was passed at the end of 2016

However, I don’t think that’s sort of, I don’t think you would say that was typical of the national government.

I think that was to that was a particular politician who had his own agenda because the national government actually didn’t know about it.

Because it was right on Christmas when it happened.

00:48:46 –  So Israel is a one of a number of countries that they engage with on a business level.

. I mean I do know of Marty who are involved in business in Israel, but I don’t sense that it’s particular kind of love for Israel, but it’s an opportunity that they’ve taken and you know they’ve taken those opportunities in other countries as well.

So Israel is a one of a number of countries that they engage with on a business level.

I had an interesting interaction recently with a tribe in the middle of the North Island. I was able to accompany the Israeli ambassador to a meeting there, and this was a first meeting with this ewi. This particular ewi they used.
